Gli U2 avevano deciso di scrivere canzoni sul vero senso della parola, e forse With or without you è quella che rappresenta di più questo concetto. Si tratta in effetti di una canzone d’amore, catturando emozioni nell’ascoltatore. Non si tratta però della sempliciotta serenata, ma se si scava a fondo si nota che contiene un’intricata ragnatela di complesse ansietà: sarà magari concisa, ma per certo è tutto fuorché immediata. La canzone ha ovviamente una dimensione spirituale, con l’amore erotico e l’amore fraterno che ancora una volta convergono all’interno della mitologia personale di Bono e lui che fa ritorno ai temi della resa e dell’abbandono dell’ego. With or without you è dominata dal suono tagliente della infinite guitar e da un basso che ripete ossessivamente un'identica sequenza di note per tutta la durata del brano. La capacità melodica di Bono è fondamentale in canzoni come quella, in cui la semplicità della struttura di base non lascia grandi possibilità di sviuluppo musicale.
